If you have been asked to write a self-evaluation but are unsure what to do, this article will help you sort out this problem and break down the steps for you to follow.

    What is a self-evaluation?

Self-evaluation or self-assessment is the process of assessing aspects of oneself to identify them. These are performance assessments that are done quarterly, semi-annually, and annually.

Self-evaluations help you highlight and review your performance, underline your career goals, and map out the path to reaching them. You must keep a record of your achievements, accomplishments, and struggles over a given period of time.

Here are some pointers related to self-evaluation:

How is your self-evaluation going to be used?

Knowing the purpose of your self-evaluation is essential in order to align your writing with its usage. This will also help you shape your writing in the way you want it to be in front of your boss or seniors.

Prepare a list of your accomplishments.

Keeping records of your achievements and things you have done will help you a lot. Include everything that you can think of, and then shorten it down to the essentials and the most valuable ones. Also, note the ones that are important for the company.

    Tell them about your struggles.

Struggles are proof of hard work and discipline. It shows that you have earned the position you are at and increases its value in the listener’s mind.

    Be honest.

Never portray a fake self in order to impress someone, especially in the case of workplaces. They don’t want to hear fake information; transparency is always appreciated and valued.

    Share your strengths and weaknesses.

It shows that you are self-aware and self-conscious and that you know your strengths and weaknesses. It helps even the person assessing you to know more about you and your areas of strength so that they can keep it in mind and present opportunities for overcoming them.

    Do’s And Don’ts

    Do’s:

    • Incorporate feedback that you have received from people around you. It shows authenticity and appreciation from the public.
    • Prioritize your achievements and accomplishments first and not just include everything just for the sake of it. Include the major events and highlights.
    • Before submitting, take a second opinion for better results. It’s always a good thing to have a second opinion before somebody else points anything out.

    Don’ts:

    • Do not make grammatical errors or typos. It shows carelessness and also makes the other person think less of you. Remember, the first impression is the last.
    • Don’t list out everything. Give time to writing a review of everything rather than just presenting a few bullet points.
    • Don’t use negative words. Make it sound cheerful and polite.

    Examples of self-evaluations:

    Teamwork self-evaluation

“I believe in working collaboratively in a team regardless of positions. I prefer taking a collective approach to making decisions or projects. It’s always better when many minds work together to come to a conclusion. It strengthens bonds and gives a shared identity.”

    Communication self-evaluation

“I believe that everybody has their own ways of communicating, and mine would be verbal communication. I can express and communicate the best in verbal form, and I know that oratory is my strong suit. Other than that, I know that I can communicate in every way possible along with my verbal skills, and I can do it all effortlessly!”

    Negotiation self-evaluation

“My past experiences have made me well versed in negotiations, and I have a good command over it. I have negotiated a deal of $2 million in the past, and it is one of my biggest achievements so far.”

    Self-awareness

“I have done my homework on myself, and I am fully aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I constantly seek feedback and approvals for my career and personal growth.”

    Emotional intelligence self-evaluation

“I consider myself as a socially and emotionally strong person. I am available for when anyone needs me and i don’t take criticism at workplace to my heart rather i believe it to be constructive and for the better. I am aware of my boundaries and make sure to not overstep them at any cost.”

    Punctuality and reliability self-evaluation

“I am quite strict with myself when it comes to work and deadlines, and I don’t dance on the edge of it. I am aligned with my deadlines and make sure never to skip them.”

    Time management self-evaluation

Over the time, I have built up great time management skills, and I am fully aware of my priorities. Whenever I find myself stuck, I make sure to talk to someone from my team or someone close to help me out but mostly I am good on my own.”

    Decision making self-evaluation

“Risk-taking is fun for me, and I don’t run away from making decisions. I believe whenever I need help, I can reach out to my peers or seniors for opinions and advice, but regardless, I don’t run away from making tough decisions.
