Coinbase bank deals span PNC Bitcoin trading, Chase links and Citi payments

Coinbase has built partnerships with PNC, JPMorgan Chase, and Citi covering Bitcoin trading, account funding, and stablecoin payments, with PNC’s service allowing eligible private banking clients to buy, sell, and hold BTC inside its digital banking platform.

    Summary

    • PNC’s eligible private banking clients can buy, sell, and hold Bitcoin through its digital platform.
    • Chase’s Coinbase agreement covers credit card funding, rewards redemption, and direct bank account connections.
    • Citi’s collaboration supports virtual accounts and merchant stablecoin payments, with settlement in traditional currency.
    • Stablecore’s technology reaches over 3,000 institutions, though that figure does not represent signed Coinbase partners.

PNC announced the Bitcoin service on Dec. 9, 2025, identifying Coinbase’s Crypto-as-a-Service infrastructure as the technology supporting the offering. Chase’s partnership describes ways to fund and connect Coinbase accounts, while Citi’s latest collaboration involves business payments and the conversion of money between traditional currencies and stablecoins.

PNC has launched Bitcoin trading for eligible private clients

Through Portfolio View in PNC Private Bank Online, qualifying clients can access crypto custody and trade Bitcoin without leaving the bank’s platform, PNC said. The offering serves a private banking business whose customers include wealthy individuals, families, family offices and business owners.

PNC described the launch as the first generation of its “crypto for clients” service. Its announcement identified trading, custody and financing among the capabilities of Coinbase’s infrastructure, while the customer product launched that day covered buying, holding and selling Bitcoin.

William Demchak, PNC’s chairman and chief executive, said:

“Our work with Coinbase allows us to provide clients with access to bitcoin trading in a controlled and familiar environment, consistent with the standards they expect from PNC.”

The bank said access for other client groups, along with further features and services, would come in later phases.

In July 2025, crypto.news previously reported the banks’ initial digital asset partnership, which included PNC providing selected banking services to Coinbase. The December launch followed that agreement with a named customer platform and a defined group of eligible users.

Chase’s Coinbase agreement covers funding and account connections

JPMorgan Chase’s arrangement, announced in July 2025, set out three routes for customers to use Coinbase. Coinbase said the partnership covered a Chase customer base of more than 80 million.

The original schedule called for Chase credit cards to become a funding option for Coinbase accounts in fall 2025. Redemption of Chase Ultimate Rewards points into Coinbase accounts, and direct links between Chase bank accounts and Coinbase were scheduled to begin in 2026.

As described in the announcement, customers would connect their existing bank accounts to Coinbase to buy crypto. The companies’ July 2025 integration agreement covered account connections through an application programming interface, alongside the card and rewards arrangements.

Coinbase’s original notice warned that purchases made with credit cards could be subject to cash advance terms and conditions. Its announcement set out the planned availability dates for each feature without giving a single launch date for the entire package.

Citi’s latest collaboration focuses on business stablecoin payments

For Citi, Coinbase’s Sept. 28, 2026, announcement describes two business payment services, including virtual accounts backed by Citi’s banking infrastructure.

Coinbase selected Citi’s Virtual Account Wallet to support Coinbase Virtual Accounts. The company said those accounts give payment customers the ability to accept, hold, and send funds, with incoming traditional currency automatically converted into stablecoins.

A separate part of the collaboration connects Coinbase’s payment infrastructure to Spring by Citi, the bank’s merchant payment acceptance platform. According to Coinbase, institutional clients can accept stablecoins at checkout without holding or managing the tokens themselves.

Coinbase handles conversion into traditional currency, while Citi settles the money as the bank of record. The company identified the United States as the first launch market, with further capabilities planned over the following months.

Brett Tejpaul, identified in that announcement as head of Coinbase Institutional, described the arrangement as providing banking infrastructure to Coinbase customers and stablecoin acceptance to Citi’s institutional clients.

Coinbase’s community bank infrastructure reaches beyond the three lenders

Coinbase announced a separate Stablecore partnership on Sept. 16, covering digital asset services within community and regional banks’ existing technology. Its community banking integration plan identified a potential footprint exceeding 3,000 U.S. banks and credit unions through Stablecore’s existing connections.

Coinbase said implementation was underway with institutions including Amarillo National Bank in Texas. Stablecore manages connections across core banking, digital banking and compliance systems, while Coinbase supplies custody and exchange infrastructure.

The announced product set includes buying, selling, holding, payments, and staking. Coinbase described a model in which participating banks keep their own branding and customer relationships while using the companies’ technology.

JPMorgan has pursued its own blockchain payment products alongside the Coinbase account arrangements. On Oct. 19, coverage of its JPM Coin Ethereum launch described access for approved institutional clients making dollar transfers, settling securities transactions, and moving collateral.

JPM Coin, which uses the ticker JPMD, represents dollar deposits held at JPMorgan. The Ethereum deployment followed the deposit token’s November 2025 launch on Base, the public blockchain developed by Coinbase. Access remains restricted to approved customers.

U.S. banking guidance permits certain services to operate through outside providers. In May 2025, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency confirmed that national banks and federal savings associations may execute purchases and sales of assets held in custody at a customer’s direction.

The regulator’s Interpretive Letter 1184 permits outsourcing of bank-permissible crypto custody and execution activities, subject to appropriate third-party risk management. The OCC said banks using sub-custodians must conduct those activities safely and comply with applicable law.
