Bitcoin faces $80K risk or $86K rebound on CPI: analysts

Bitcoin has rebounded above $83,000, according to ViaBTC’s Jeff Ko, as analysts have identified a drop below $80,000 or a recovery toward $86,000 as possible outcomes of this week’s U.S. inflation report.

    Summary

    • BTSE’s Jeff Mei says hotter inflation could push Bitcoin below $80,000, while softer data could lift it above $86,000.
    • ViaBTC’s Jeff Ko remains constructive but wants U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF flows to recover.
    • Bitget Wallet’s Lacie Zhang sees resilience against oil pressure, although sustained buying remains essential.
    • Zhang says expected Strategy purchases may offer only modest support because investors already anticipate its accumulation.

Jeff Mei, chief operating officer at BTSE, told crypto.news that ETF withdrawals and uncertainty over Wednesday’s U.S. Consumer Price Index report could bring more volatility ahead of the Federal Reserve’s Oct. 28 rate decision.

In Mei’s assessment, investors currently expect the Fed to avoid a second rate increase. A stronger-than-expected inflation reading could challenge that expectation and send Bitcoin below $80,000, while a softer result could support a rebound toward $86,000 or higher.

Bitcoin’s $80K and $86K scenarios depend on inflation

With traders awaiting the release, Mei described an uncertain start to the week as investors pull money from crypto ETFs.

“Right now the consensus is that the Fed will not hike rates a second time, so if inflation comes in higher than expected, Bitcoin could potentially dip back below the $80k mark,” Mei said.

“Lower inflation will mean the opposite, in which case Bitcoin could rebound to $86k or higher.”

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has scheduled September CPI for Oct. 14 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, followed by September Producer Price Index data on Oct. 15 at the same time.

For Jeff Ko, chief analyst at ViaBTC, Wednesday’s CPI is largely priced in. In his comments, Ko put consensus expectations at 3.6%–3.7% for headline inflation and 2.4%–2.5% for core inflation, saying traders are hoping for a softer reading.

Alongside CPI, Ko identified Thursday’s PPI and retail sales figures as important follow-up releases. He also said the reaction in Treasury yields deserves attention, citing a slight decline in the 10-year yield to 5.24%.

Earlier, an Oct. 1 report on Bitcoin’s October support recorded Ko and Zhang’s focus on $82,000. Zhang then placed a downside liquidation zone at $82,000–$82,500, warning that losing it could accelerate a fall toward $80,000.

ETF withdrawals leave analysts looking for fresh buying

After losing momentum around Token2049, Bitcoin has recovered above $83,000, Ko said. He attributed the preceding weakness to profit-taking and pressure from higher Treasury yields and oil prices.

Despite the pullback, Ko described funding around 3.2% as healthy and said leverage remained contained. His constructive view would receive additional support if spot ETF flows recover after what he estimated as roughly $800 million in withdrawals last week.

From Bitget Wallet, research analyst Lacie Zhang cited approximately $681 million in weekly U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF outflows, arguing that institutional demand remains uneven.

The Oct. 8 report on Bitcoin ETF withdrawals documented $484.9 million leaving the funds on Oct. 7, their largest daily withdrawal since June. Farside Investors data cited in that report put BlackRock’s IBIT outflow at $207.7 million, Fidelity’s FBTC at $105.1 million and ARK 21Shares’ ARKB at $101.7 million.

Before that withdrawal, Bitfinex had already linked slower ETF buying to Bitcoin’s difficulty advancing. The Oct. 6 report put weekly inflows at $241.1 million for Sep. 28–Oct. 2, down from $2.39 billion the preceding week.

Using Checkonchain’s estimate, Bitfinex placed ETF investors’ average purchase price at $84,320. Its analysts said investors returning to breakeven could help explain weaker buying and called for fresh spot purchases to sustain another advance.

Oil pressure has tested Bitcoin’s ability to hold support

Against renewed Middle East tensions, Zhang described Bitcoin’s ability to hold the $80,000–$84,000 area while Brent traded above $100–$105 as evidence of resilience and some separation from traditional geopolitical risk.

“Sustained support despite oil spikes is constructive for Bitcoin’s near-term trajectory as a digital store of value, although the broader flow picture remains mixed,” Zhang said.

In Ko’s account, oil had fallen to around $90 after President Donald Trump pledged not to strike Iran before the midterms. Ko said the pledge reduced some escalation risk, while disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi attacks on Saudi energy facilities remained risks.

An Oct. 9 report on Bitcoin’s recovery above $82K recorded Trump’s Oct. 8 statement ruling out attacks before the Nov. 3 U.S. midterm elections. The report placed WTI near $90.40 and Brent near $102.91, following Bitcoin’s retreat toward $80,300.

On sentiment, Zhang cited Fear & Greed readings around 58–69 as neutral to greedy rather than signs of panic. She said support holding through oil pressure was encouraging, but ETF flows and other risk conditions would still influence the next move.

Strategy expectations may provide only modest support

With attention also turning to corporate purchases, Zhang said Strategy-related buying expectations could provide modest additional support, although much of its recurring demand may already be priced in.

According to Zhang, Michael Saylor’s Oct. 11 “There’s always room for more orange” post displayed roughly 848,000 BTC valued near $70.5 billion and 117 previous purchase points. She noted that similar Sunday posts have often preceded confirmed weekly filings.

At close to 4% of Bitcoin’s total supply and an average cost around $75,400, Strategy’s holdings give its accumulation credibility, Zhang said. However, she described recent purchases as relatively modest and placed more weight on the recurring post-to-filing pattern and its profitable purchase price.

Outside Bitcoin, Ko said Ethereum looked more vulnerable, citing $478 million in spot ETF withdrawals over two weeks, which he considered relatively modest. For Ethereum’s strength against Bitcoin, he identified the ETH/BTC ratio of 0.031 as a critical reference point.
